Homily of Pope Benedict XVI during World Youth Day in Sydney
News

wyd_foto_05www.radiovaticana.org  “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8). We have seen this promise fulfilled! On the day of Pentecost, as we heard in the first reading, the Risen Lord, seated at the right hand of the Father, sent the Spirit upon the disciples gathered in the Upper Room. In the power of that Spirit, Peter and the Apostles went forth to preach the Gospel to the ends of the earth. In every age, and in every language, the Church throughout the world continues to proclaim the marvels of God and to call all nations and peoples to faith, hope and new life in Christ.

pardilla-b( OR ) July 07th 2008 - A.      PARDILLA,“The women religious yesterday, today and tomorrow” (“Le religiose ieri, oggi e domani”, Libreria Editrice Vaticana, Città del Vaticano 2008, pp. 436).

This book of the claretian priest A. Pardilla is rather a sociological radiogram of forty years (1965-2005) of religious life in Institutes of women. Such an image has been developed by means of an accurate analysis of the number of the members of individual religious Institutes of pontifical right. Pope Benedict XVI has affirmed that religious life is in need of “an authentic revival: “With regard to the Orders and Congregations with a long tradition in the Church, we must note (…) that in the last decades almost all of them  – male as well as female –  have been through a difficult crisis”. The results of this investigation help us to understand the concrete and realistic sense of the words of the Pope.

The month of July was marked by the final stages of preparation for the 23rd World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia. On 2 July the Holy Father gave the only audience of the month beginning a new series of catechesis dedicated to Saint Paul in this Year of Saint Paul. Among the private audiences granted in July by the Holy Father Benedict XVI, we recall the audience on July 3 with Cardinal José Saraiva Martins, Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, during which the Holy Father authorised the promulgation of decrees on the heroic virtues of Father Damian, missionary to the lepers in Molokai, and Mr and Mrs Martin, the parents of Saint Therese of Lisieux. During the Angelus reflection on 6 July the Pope appealed to the participants at the G8 summit in Hokkaido-Toyako, to make the needs of the poorest and most needy people the centre of their deliberations. On 14 July the Supreme Pontiff sent three messages. In the first the Pope said he hoped that young people taking part in WYD would “truly find rest in the Lord, and be filled with joy and fervour for spreading the Good News among their friends, their families, and all whom they meet.”; in the second in view of Mission Sunday 2008, the Holy Father said: “Today there are countless people who are waiting for the proclamation of the Gospel, those who are thirsting for hope and love. There are so many who let themselves be questioned deeply by this request for aid that rises up from humanity, who leave everything for Christ and transmit faith and love for Him to people!”; in the third addressed to the Holy See representative at Expo Zaragoza 2008, he reaffirmed that every person has the right to access clean water, a right “rooted in the dignity of the human person”. At the beginning of July Benedict XVI moved to his Summer Residence in Castel Gandolfo, where he prepared for the important and demanding visit to Sydney to preside the celebration of 23rd World Youth Day. The Holy Father's long awaited presence in that part of the world started on 17 July with the welcoming ceremony at Government House; the same day the Pope took part in a welcoming celebration at Bangaroo Harbour, during which he said: “Before me I see a vibrant image of the universal Church”. The next day the Pope presided an ecumenical meeting in the Crypt of St. Mary’s Cathedral, after which he went to the Cathedral Chapter Hall to meet representatives of other religions present in Australia. Saturday 19 the Pontiff celebrated Mass with the Catholic Bishops of Australia and said in the homily “the question of God can never be kept quiet”; in the evening the Pope joined thousands of young people gathered at Randwick Racecourse for the WYD Prayer Vigil: “Gathered before our much-travelled Cross and the icon of Mary, and under the magnificent constellation of the Southern Cross, we pray” the Pope told the young people. The culminating event of the Apostolic Journey was the celebration of WYD Mass on Sunday 20 July with the administration of the Sacrament of Confirmation and the announcement that Madrid, Spain, will host the next international Word Youth Day in 2010. On Monday 28 July the Holy Father travelled to the northern Italian mountain town of Brixen for a brief period of rest.

AMERICA/UNITED STATES - Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate: support for deaf Catholics

Hayward (Agenzia Fides) – The first religious community to work directly in an apostolate for the deaf began in the United States on August 27, 2006. The founder is Father Thomas Coughlin, who has been working for thirty years with the deaf in the Dioceses of Honolulu, Denver, and San Francisco. Father Coughlin’s story, that of a priest born deaf, began in 1977 when he was ordained as a priest in the Trinitarian Order. At that time, sign-language was not so often used in liturgical celebrations and Bishop Joseph Ferrario who was perhaps the only bishop in the United States at the time skilled in American Sign Language. The Bishop asked Father Coughlin to come to his Diocese of Honolulu in 1987, where carried out a ministry for the deaf. Sts. Peter and Paul Parish he celebrated the Mass in sign language and created a ministry to the deaf. At that time, he expressed his determination to start an order of priests who are deaf for the deaf, however he ran into many difficulties in doing so. At the time, few if any seminaries and religious orders welcomed deaf candidates. He left Hawaii in the early 1990s to follow his dream in Denver, where he was encouraged by the Dominicans to form a new branch in the Dominican Order designed specifically for the deaf candidates and apostolate. Father Coughlin understood that deaf priests could play an important role in helping other Catholics with this handicap, especially in terms of translating the Mass into sign language. Interested in his work, then-Archbishop William J. Levada of San Francisco invited him to come in 2002 to carry out his apostolate in Saint Benedict Parish. In 2004, the Association was recognized by the Church as a Private Association of Faithful for the apostolate with the deaf. In August 2006, five men, Fr. Thomas Coughlin among them made their vows as Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate. Their objective, according to the founder, is: “preach the Gospel to the deaf with sign language and give them a chance to complete seminary studies in their mother tongue, i.e. sign language.” The community follows the Rule of St. Augustine and is not yet officially affiliated to the Dominicans, although this is a future goal. The Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate currently reside in All Saints Parish in Hayward (California). The other four Brothers are from Cameroon, Burundi, and the United States. AFRICA/TOGO - Over 50,000 people affected by floods in western Africa, while a rise in food ...

Lomé (Agenzia Fides) - More than 50,000 people in various West African countries have been affected by floods. 10,000 people have been forced from their homes in Togo and the country's trade links with Burkina Faso have been disrupted after the rains made several bridges unusable. The rising waters of the Senegal River have displaced about 4,600 people in southern Mauritania. In Mali, at least six people are reported to have died because of the floods. It is feared that with the destruction of the fields and crops, in addition to the transportation systems, another rise in food prices will result, affecting the entire population of the area. Last year’s floods and escalating costs of agricultural products and fuel on the international market have already led to a food emergency. The worst situation is in the landlocked countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad, which are having to face even higher transportation costs in importing food. In order to avoid similar emergency situations in the future, there should be a greater investment in local agriculture and a boost in the internal transportation infrastructures. In an editorial article in the “Republic of Togo,” it states that the destruction of the infrastructure from the rains has been a national disaster. The article also mentions that the embargo on international aid for 15 years was already placing the public infrastructure in a precarious position. The newspaper calls for less waste and embezzlement of funds in rebuilding the road ways, and an emphasis on their quality. Healthy governing is the only means to avoiding or reducing the damages caused by nature. (LM) (Agenzia Fides 1/8/2008)

EUROPE/SPAIN - “The whole truth on abortion” brochure offers informational material in a clear ...

Madrid (Agenzia Fides) – The Spanish organization “S.O.S. Familia” has begun free distribution of a brochure entitled, “The whole truth on abortion,” which offers informational material in a clear and simple format in response to the main questions on this serious issue. Some of the questions typical of an 18-year-old young woman are presented in the brochure: “I do not want the child that I am expecting. Can I have an abortion? The State says it is ok. Why does the Church condemn it?”. According to “SOS Familia,” “abortion is the worst open wound present in countless mothers and families, as it is in Spanish society; there is hardly any other issue that has caused more pain and conflict.” More questions are formed: “Aborting is a crime or just a surgical procedure? Are 100,000 unborn children killed each year in Spain, or is freedom awarded to 100,000 would-be mothers who have ‘liberated’ themselves from an ‘undesired pregnancy’? Are these mothers happy as a result of what they have done, or are they left with a profound lifelong trauma?” Francisco Gonzalez, coordinator of the campaign, affirmed that the success of the pamphlet has been surprising. With hardly any publicity, a total of 50,000 brochures were distributed in June of this year alone. In July, an updated edition was published and had an even wider circulation than the previous two editions. “The issue is treated in its harsh reality, yet in an elevated and respectful manner. The pamphlet is easy-to-read and once you open it, it’s hard to put down,” the coordinator commented. (RG) (Agenzia Fides 1/8/2008)
