Update

women( www.cgfmanet.org ) “There is a shared opinion that one of the most significant revolutions of our era – without any bloodshed, but still very costly – was the one carried out by women who have changed the face of the family and of society.” (Di Nicola - Danish).

We want to look at what this statement means on the occasion of World Women's Day and in the light of the 15th anniversary of the World Conference on Women held in Peking in 1995.

Let’s Kick out Trafficking in Persons
Message

2010_fifa_world_cup_logo ( www.mmmworldwide.org ) Africa is proud that the 19th FIFA World Cup will be held on its soil for the first time. For every seven tourists, one job will be created in South Africa. But an international meeting of religious women held in Johannesburg last month was concerned that not everyone will enjoy the event.

Wherever major world sporting events are located, brothels tend to spring up and vulnerable women could be trafficked to meet the demand.

EUROPE/ITALY - 30th Anniversary of Archbishop Romero's Assassination: Day of Prayer and Fasting ...

Rome (Agenzia Fides) – On March 24, 1980, Archbishop Oscar A. Romero of San Salvador was assassinated. Since 1993, this date was chosen by the Youth Missionary Movement of the Pontifical Mission Societies in Italy to be a day each year on which to recall all the missionaries killed in the world, with a "Day of Prayer and Fasting in Remembrance of the Missionary Martyrs." The initiative, now in its eighteenth year, was soon extended to many dioceses and several religious institutions in the world, that devote special efforts to remember their slain missionaries, together with all those who shed their blood for the Gospel. In this year 2010, the 30th anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Romero, the day is dedicated to him, with the theme being his expression: "My life belongs to you." "Any martyrdom, any murder, any assassination carries with it the bitter taste of injustice and abuse, of the worst in man being acted out," writes Don Gianni Cesena, National Director of the PMS, in the preparatory material for this day. "Yet every Christian martyrdom belongs to the 'Beatitudes' of Jesus ... On the seed of Romero, like that of the ancient and contemporary Christian martyrs, every Christian community regains the deep meaning of life according to the Gospel, and often the courage of an 'active' memory that is not resigned and is inspired to continue on the journey with greater momentum. The parish communities and consecrated life, seminaries, novice houses, are all invited to use the guidelines for the Vigil: Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic Adoration, ecumenical services, all prepared for this occasion, not only on March 24, but on the days preceding and following it. There are also ideas like set apart a corner of the Church for Martyrs, using a cross, a red cloth (that could also be on the front door as well), and an olive branch with the names of missionaries who have been killed; ring the bells at 3:00pm on March 24, inviting the people to meditate on Christ’s sacrifice and on the many men and women who have offered their lives; and plant a tree in memory of those who have given everything for love. Families can place lit candles in their windows or place a red cloth on display, as a visible sign of the commemoration; take part in an act of reconciliation: among members of the same household, between neighbors or members of the extended family, etc. and offer a donation from fasting, in support of the help project proposed for this year. The sick are encouraged to offer their suffering in memory of the missionary martyrs and for the spread of the Gospel, and to sustain missionaries and to ask the Lord for the gift of new holy missionary vocations. The young people are encouraged to give blood and visit those in the hospital, those who are alone, in prison... This year, the solidarity project that will be supported with the offerings from the fast on March 24 is that of the construction of a youth center run by the Canossian Fathers in the district of Tondo, one of the poorest and most desolate areas of Manila. ASIA/HONG KONG - Bishop Tong presides Rite of Election: nearly 3,000 catechumens to receive ...

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – Participation in community life and strengthening the faith are the two recommendations that Bishop John Tong, Bishop of Hong Kong, made to the catechumens during the Rite of Election, held March 7 in the Parish of St. Francis. According to reports from the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), there are about 3,000 catechumens in Hong Kong that this Easter will receive the Sacraments of Christian Initiation. Thus, last Sunday, two Rites of Election were held. During the homily, Bishop Tong highlighted the theme of living water, indicating that constant prayer is the best way to receive the "living water" of Jesus. He then encouraged the catechumens "always reflect on the Word of God, distancing yourselves from all things that are incompatible with the faith." Only in this manner can we “get closer and closer to Christ and Our Heavenly Father, and bear witness to Jesus." The Bishop spiritually and symbolically handed over the Scriptures to the catechumens, that they may become their life's companion, keeping the flame of faith alive in their hearts. The next Rite of Elections will be held March 14, in the Parishes of St. Andrew and St. Benedict, as well as March 21 in the Parishes of St. Andrew and Christ the King (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 09/03/2010)

AMERICA/CUBA - “La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre”: a national devotion

Santiago de Cuba (Agenzia Fides) – The short film “La Caridad que nos une,” which was recently debuted, illustrates the popular devotion Cubans have to Our Lady of Charity of El Cobre ("La Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre"). 2012 marks the 400th anniversary of the discovery of the image of the Virgin Mary and Cubans are preparing for this important anniversary with a three-year plan. A note on the presentation of the film by Orlandovich Tornes, published on the website of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Cuba, highlights that the Rialto Cinema, close to the Cathedral of Santiago de Cuba, where the short film was presented, was full of people. Presenting the film and the authors was Dr. David Silveira Toledo, Head of the Department of Art History at the University of the East. Orlandovich Tornes comments: "One could sense the excitement of the audience and many of them had been a part of the pictures presented. I saw a lady next to me who kept wiping her eyes with a handkerchief and I heard the comments: 'It was like being there again!'” "CanXs,” the group of authors, was very pleased with the presentation and thanked everyone involved, explaining how they had put their hearts into their work, to overcome the shortage of resources. "When I showed the trailer,” said Tornes, announcing a preview on the Internet, “they told me they had also received numerous phone calls asking for permission to reproject the film in cinemas, and we are now working towards that." At the end, the people applauded for over two minutes. According to tradition, in the early seventeenth century, three workers were in search of salt in a small canoe. They were on the waters of the northeastern part of the Bay of Nipe when they spotted a small white package that seemed to be a bird, floating between the foam of the waves. It was dawn and the day began to light up, so they paddled towards it. To their great surprise, it was the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, still dry, resting on a piece of wood on which was written: "I am the Virgin of Charity." Spreading from the village of El Cobre, the Marian devotion grew so much that it is now the deepest devotion throughout the Cuban nation. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 09/03/2010)

OCEANIA/AUSTRALIA - Year for Priests vocation boom, WYD is contributing factor

Sydney (Agenzia Fides) – Six ordinations this June, an increase in seminarians, and many youth showing interest in the priesthood and religious life, embarking on vocational discernment...there are some of the signs of the “vocation boom” being reported by the Archdiocese of Sydney. "There is no doubt there has been an upsurge in interest in a priestly vocation," says Fr Anthony Percy, Rector of the Seminary of Good Shepherd, who believes this is due in part to the success not just of Sydney's World Youth Day in 2008, but of World Youth Days held over the past one and a half decades. He also believes that the Year for Priests, proclaimed in June 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI, has also had an effect. Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, is scheduled to ordain six priests on June 11. As Fides learns from the Archdiocese, it is the largest group in 20 years. In addition to the seminarians who will be ordained priests, two Ugandan-born young men who have spent the past four years studying at the seminary in Australia will be ordained in July 2010 in their country of origin, and later return to Australia to carry out their pastoral ministry. “While Australia has been battling against a shortage of priests since the late 1980s, it now looks as if interest in the priesthood and men seeking priestly vocations is once more on the rise,” the Archdiocese notes. Fr. Percy confirms this renewed interest, telling of how 10 young men were accepted as candidates for the priesthood by the Seminary of the Good Shepherd and all have now commenced their first academic year of study. The Rector also credits this increase in seminarians to the new forms of evangelization among the youth which are now present in Australia, e.g. the new technologies, blogs, encounters, and other initiatives like Theology on Tap. This coming Sunday, March 14, the Seminary is organizing a special “Vocation Inquiry Day,” which will be attended by hundreds of youth and will feature prayer, one-on-one dialogue, the Mass, and discussion groups. AMERICA/COLOMBIA - On International Women's Day, remembering the women who contributed to the ...

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) – "Freedom to Live with Dignity" is the slogan of the 2010 International Women's Day being celebrated today, Monday, March 8. In Colombia, the theme takes on special meaning as this year the nation, like other Latin American countries, remembers and commemorates their Bicentennial Anniversary of Independence. With a specific campaign, the "Life, Justice, and Peace Commission" of the National Secretariat of Social Pastoral Ministry, wants to recall the women who played a major role in winning the freedom of Colombia. Thus, several women who were figures of the independence period and the last 200 years of history of Colombia have been selected, highlighting a few of them for their a deep faith convictions, in which they found the reason and the strength to fight for freedom. For this campaign, they have also prepared a booklet that has four themes: Independence With a Woman's Face, They Continue to Live in Slavery, Opening New Spaces, and Everything and Everyone Working Towards Peace. For this special occasion, Bishop Jaime Prieto Amaya of Cucuta has published a letter-press statement that explains the Catholic Church's appreciation of women. He recalls the most recent events that have affected public opinion in the country, the results of two major reports: the "Ninth Report on Socio-Political Violence Against Women, Youth and Children in Colombia" and "Employment Discrimination of Women," presenting the reality of the situation in Colombia. The letter presents the Church's proposal in a concrete way: "The Church has a serious proposal for society and a plan for all her sons and daughters, for her faithful. The proposal, the plan of the Church, does not lead to divisive antagonism between males and females. The two must work together in building the present and the future for society. This proposal is based on values which are indispensable for the Church and for society, e.g. the family and motherhood, which do not prevent their active participation in other areas of social life and furthermore, are crucial for its overall development."
