VATICAN - Pope congratulates Hebrew community on New Year: “may we all grow in the desire to ...

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – On the occasion of the celebration of Rosh Ha-Shanah 5771, Yom Kippur and Sukkot, the Holy Father Benedict XVI sent the Chief Rabbi of Rome, Riccardo Di Segni, the following telegram: "In celebration of Rosh Ha-Shanah 5771, Yom Kippur and Sukkot, I wish to send you my most cordial and sincere greetings, to you and to the entire Jewish community of Rome, with the hope that these celebrations can be a source of blessings from the Lord and be a source of deep joy. May we all grow in the desire to promote the justice and peace that the world is so in need of today. With feelings of gratitude and affection, I remember my visit to the main temple. May God, in His goodness, protect the entire community and grant us the grace to grow in mutual friendship, in Rome and in the world. Benedictus PP. XVI." (SL) (Agenzia Fides 10/09/2010)

AFRICA/EGYPT - A fire destroys the Church of Hagazah, in Upper Egypt

Luxor (Agenzia Fides) – A fire has destroyed the church of the Catholic Copts in the village of Hagazah, Quena Province, Upper Egypt, in the Diocese of Tebe - Luxor. Fides was informed of the event through Bishop Joannes Zakaria, Coptic Catholic Bishop of Luxor, Egypt. Towards one o'clock in the morning of Monday, September 6, 2010, I received a dozen phone calls to inform me that a major fire had broken out in the village church of Hagazah," Bishop Zakaria told Fides. "When I arrived in Hagazah, I saw that the fire had destroyed the entire church building and that nothing had been spared." "In the days that followed, I met with government authorities, and police chiefs, who informed me that the fire had been caused by a short circuit. During the meeting, I asked their permission to prepare a provisional arrangement to celebrate Mass next Sunday for the 600 Catholic Copts living in the village of Hagazah, but unfortunately they have responded negatively," said the Bishop of Luxor. "This village has a difficult history of violence, tribulation, and not very good relations between Christians and Muslims," Bishop recalls Zakaria The Coptic Catholic Church in Hagazah was founded by the Franciscan Friars Minor in 1890. "It is worth noting that this is the third fire in my diocese. Three years ago, the third floor of the Bishop's Residence in Luxor was burned, and a year ago, part of the house of the Franciscan Sisters Minor of the Sacred Heart was burned, in the city of Isna. This year, the Catholic Church in the village of Hagazah was burnt. In all three cases, the cause of the fire was always a short circuit," says Bishop Zakaria. "We – myself, the poor parish priest, and the 600 Coptic Catholic faithful of Hagazah - need your prayers and your solidarity, so that our courage may not fail and so that our Good Lord will help us to continue to live and witness to our faith in love and peace," concluded the Bishop of Luxor. AMERICA/COLOMBIA - Week for Migrants, Refugees, and Marginalized: “Every migrant is a person”

Bogota (Agenzia Fides) – The Colombian Bishops' Conference has promoted September 12 to 19, the National Week of the Migrant, Refugee, and Marginalized. The slogan, according to the note sent to Fides, is: "Every life, a story; every dream, a commitment; every migrant, a person." This celebration, which has taken place every year for over 15 years, is coordinated by the National Secretariat of Pastoral Social Ministry (SNPS/Caritas Colombiana) and the Archdiocese of Bogota, through the Pastoral Commission on Human Mobility. The initiative, which will conclude Sunday, September 19, the World Day of Migrants, is guided by the Holy Father's Message, which this year (2010) focuses on immigrant and refugee minors. The aim is to raise awareness among the Christian community about the reality of migration and displacement. From September 12 to 19, different activities will take place that will help participants to see the reality of itinerant peoples and show solidarity towards them. Among other initiatives, on September 14, the Fifth Forum on experience of helping children and adolescents, victims of armed conflict in Colombia, will take place at the headquarters of the Colombian Bishops' Conference - Auditorium Regina Apostolorum. During the week, depending on the programming of each parish, there will be a recitation of the Rosary for migrants. On September 17, at the school of La Presentacion, the entire afternoon will be devoted to the integration of children, with the theme "Grow and Dream Together." On Sunday, September 19, at 12:30pm, in the Parish of Our Lady of Lourdes, there will be a special Mass for the World Day of Migrants. On September 25, there will be a meeting on interculturalism within the framework of the “Expocatólica” of Colombia. ASIA/HONG KONG - Education Day: asking parents and teachers to be “like the Good Shepherd”

Hong Kong (Agenzia Fides) – “I know my sheep and my sheep know me,” (Jn 10, 14) is the theme of Education Day in the Diocese of Hong Kong, to be celebrated September 26. According to reports from the Kong Ko Bao (the Chinese version of the diocesan bulletin), the Education Day wants to encourage parents and teachers to be "like the Good Shepherd, to help and accompany the growth of the youth. All parishes are invited to the Mass to be celebrated on this day. In addition, the diocese asks teachers to identify themselves more with the Good Shepherd, taking on their mission to communicate Gospel values, ethics, and religious morality. Parents need to know and respect the talents and skills of their children by listening, helping, and protecting them, like a good shepherd. Students and young people of today must appreciate and show gratitude for the dedication of parents and teachers. Moreover, the good shepherd must always await and welcome the lost sheep." Today, thanks to Facebook, blogs, and Twitter ... educators have many opportunities to help young people meet the challenges of our times, using their own language. (NZ) (Agenzia Fides 09/10/2010)
